Sandy Lane (resort)
Sandy Lane is a luxury five-diamond beach-front resort situated close to Holetown and Paynes Bay, in Saint James on the island-nation of Barbados.[1] Sandy Lane was first opened in 1961 on what was formerly a sugar cane plantation. In 1998, the original resort was demolished and for three years underwent a $450 million dollar upgrade and renovation.[2] The brand new resort, designed by Richmond International [3] was then reopened in 2000.
.[4] The resort features 112 guestrooms and suites as well as a five-bedroon villa, a 47,000 sq. ft.spa, four restaurants, seven bars and three golf courses two of which were golf designed by the well-known golf course designer Tom Fazio: The Green Monkey and The Country Club, where Tiger Woods' wedding was held in 2004.
Sandy Lane is known as one of the Caribbean's most stylish and family-friendly hotels, as well as being a haven of the rich and famous. Past guests said to have stayed at the Sandy Lane hotel include Maria Callas, T. S. Eliot, Queen Elizabeth II, Elton John, Jacqueline Kennedy, Aristotle Onassis, [[Michael Winner], Simon Cowell and Sidney Poitier. [5]
Sandy Lane is owned by Irish billionaires J. P. McManus, Dermot Desmond and John Magnier. In 2006, it hosted the World Golf Championships World Cup, which was won by Germany.[6][7]
On November 11, 2011 (11-11-11) NBC's Today Show aired the segment "Where in the World is Matt Lauer" pool-side and on the beach of the hotel.
Sandy Lane is a member of The Leading Hotels of the World (LHW).[8]
